Could you imagine calling this home for a while?

We're looking for one person or a couple to become part of life at Tyinstølen

– a traditional Norwegian mountain lodge at the gateway to Jotunheimen National Park.

If you enjoy mountain life, independence and welcoming guests, this might be exactly the change of pace you've been looking for.

A different kind of winter

No traffic.

No crowds.

No stress.

Just mountains, fresh air, quiet mornings, evenings by the fire.

Some days you'll welcome guests from all over the world.

Other days you'll have the mountains almost entirely to yourself.

Life here moves at nature's pace.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone who enjoys responsibility just as much as freedom.

Someone who feels just as comfortable welcoming guests as spending a quiet afternoon in the mountains.

Experience is welcome, but personality matters far more.

✓ Driver's licence
✓ Own car highly recommended
✓ Couples are especially encouraged to apply

Previous experience with winter conditions is important.

You don't need to have experienced a Norwegian winter before, but you should feel comfortable in snowy, remote environments and be someone we can rely on when the weather turns challenging.

There may occasionally be times when you're the only person at Tyinstølen.

We're looking for someone who stays calm, uses good judgement and is comfortable taking responsibility when needed.

Meet your hosts

Hi!

We're Michelle and Jo.

A few years ago we took over Tyinstølen because we fell in love with this place.

Today we welcome guests from all over the world, and we're looking for someone who would like to become part of our little mountain community for a winter.

We can't wait to meet you.

Finding the right people is far more important to us than finding the perfect CV.

We'd love to hear your story.

Interested?

We'd love to get to know you. Tell us a little about yourself:

  • Who are you?
  • Where are you from?
  • Why would you like to spend a winter at Tyinstølen?
  • When are you available?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply as a couple?

Absolutely! In fact, couples are especially encouraged to apply.

We believe this lifestyle suits couples particularly well, especially during the quieter parts of the winter.

Do I need hospitality experience?

Not necessarily.

Experience in hospitality, tourism or customer service is definitely an advantage, but personality, independence and a positive attitude are far more important to us.

Do I need experience living in a cold climate?

Yes, previous experience with winter conditions is important.

You don't need to have experienced a Norwegian winter before, but you should feel comfortable with snow, cold temperatures and changing mountain weather.

Winter at Tyinstølen can mean heavy snowfall, temperatures down to -30°C, and occasional snowstorms.

We're looking for someone who stays calm, uses good judgement and can be trusted to take care of both themselves and the property when the weather becomes challenging.

What does a typical day look like?

No two days are the same.

Some days you might prepare a cabin, clean the shared facilities, welcome arriving guests or take care of practical tasks around the property.

Other days there may be no guests at all, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy the mountains or focus on your own interests.

Christmas and special events are naturally much busier than the rest of the season.

Is food included?

No.

You'll prepare your own meals using the lodge kitchen, which is shared with us when we're at Tyinstølen and with the café during opening hours.

The nearest grocery store is about 15 minutes awayby car.

What accommodation do you provide?

You'll have your own private bedroom and access to a staff bathroom.

WiFi is included, and you'll also have access to the lodge kitchen.

Can I work remotely?

Yes!

We have reliable WiFi and good mobile coverage, so remote work is absolutely possible during the quieter parts of the season.

Do I need a car?

A driver's licence is required, and having your own car is highly recommended.

We're located in a remote mountain area, around 15 minutesfrom the nearest grocery store and 40 minutesfrom the nearest town.

Is there a lot of work every day?

No.

The workload varies greatly throughout the season.

Some weeks are very quiet with only a few daily tasks, while Christmas and special events are much busier.

We're looking for someone who enjoys this variation and appreciates the quieter pace of mountain life.

How long can I stay?

We're looking for someone between September/October and March/April.

A minimum stay of one monthis required, and applicants who are available for the full season will be given priority.

Can I bring my own pet?

Possibly.

Please tell us a little about your pet when you apply, and we'll see if it's something we can accommodate.

What should I do during the quiet periods?

The quieter weeks are one of the things many people love most about staying here.

Spend your free time skiing, snowshoeing, reading, working remotely, taking photos,

exploring the mountains or simply enjoying the peace and quiet.

We're looking for someone who enjoys slowing down and doesn't need to be constantly busy to have a great time.

Will I be alone?

Sometimes, yes.

During quieter parts of the season there may be days when you're the only person staying at Tyinstølen. At other times you'll be working alongside us, other staff members or welcoming guests from around the world.

Being comfortable spending time on your own is an important part of this role.

How do I apply?

Simply send us a short introduction about yourself.

We'd love to know:

  • Who are you?
  • Where are you from?
  • What experience do you have?
  • Why would you like to spend a winter at Tyinstølen?
  • When are you available?
  • Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
